A FANTASTIC GUIDE TO MALLORCA
In an article featured in our Fantastic Frank Paper, Kalle Wallroth, co-owner of our Palma office, shared his recommendations for experiencing the best of Mallorca. From noon until night, he shared his highlights on where to go, what to see, and how to live like a local.
A perfect day would start with a quick hilly bike ride up into the mountains surrounding Palma. A long-time favorite is going through the villages of Es Capdella, Galilea, and Puigpunyent. A challenging ride that offers some amazing views and really the reasons why I moved here in the first place – unspoilt nature and mountains close to the city.
I then head downtown for some inspiring art exhibitions. But first, a coffee at one of my favorite places like Mistral Coffee House, The Barn Coffee Roasters, or Nanø Coffee Lab. A gallery I really enjoy is L21 Gallery, a contemporary art space showcasing works by both emerging and established artists. It’s a cool hub for modern art in the city. Gallery Red is another favorite. It is actually a collection of 10 art galleries surrounding the square of Frederic Chopin, showcasing contemporary art such as Warhol and Basquiat mixed with local artists and iconic design – a visit here is always inspiring.
I especially enjoy walking the streets and narrow alleys of the Old Town of Palma; there’s always something new to discover. On a hot summer day, it is usually quiet, and the historic buildings offer a nice shade.
For a homemade light lunch, I go to Café Riutort, a cozy café run by a passionate crowd, offering vegetarian dishes and homemade pastries in a relaxed atmosphere.
If I am in the mood for some shopping, the streets of Jaume III, Paseo del Born, Carrer Unió, and Carrer dels Paraires are the place to be. An area with local boutiques and designer stores, offering the biggest brands mixed with local and unique fashion. Arquinesia Perfumes is a niche perfume brand from Mallorca, inspired by the beautiful places of the Balearic Islands. I usually bring visitors here. The shop itself is an experience – housed in an old apartment full of character, you move from room to room to discover different scents.
A stop at Bar Bosch is a classic. Established in 1936, it is one of the oldest bars in Palma, a historic establishment. Sipping on a chilled vermouth and soaking up the busy street life never fails.
Now it is a good time to head east on the pathway along the coastline, a popular stretch for runners and walkers alike. A short stroll takes me to Assaona Beach Club with an inviting stretch of sand, perfect for a dip in the sea. If I’m in the mood for a quieter beach experience in nature, a nice alternative is to go out to Cala Portals Vells. This hidden gem consists of a series of small coves with crystal-clear waters.
In summer, it is a treat to travel up to one of the beautiful mountain towns for dinner. It’s just a short drive away, and the cooler temperature is welcoming for outdoor dining. In Valldemossa, the recommendation is El Taller, and in Deià there is the restaurant Nama. The scenery and atmosphere are mesmerizing in both towns.
In the late evening, I meet up with some good company and move downtown. This time we go to Hotel Sant Francesc’s rooftop terrace, an elegant and lesser-known spot offering breathtaking views of the city’s rooftops and the cathedral. It’s a tranquil place for a drink under the stars.
